When meeting with clients at the onset of their cases I always ask if they have uninsured motorist coverage and more likely than not the response is “I have full coverage.”

Sadly they are wrong.  What is UM/UIM coverage?  It is found on your car insurance policy and pays for your damages (injuries, pain and suffering, lost wages) when the person who caused the accident doesn’t have any BI (bodily injury) coverage or not enough.  20% of Florida drivers were uninsured in 2014 AND 33% of BI policies in Florida had the minimum coverage of $10,000 of coverage.  I have to turn down roughly 15-20% of cases because there is no BI or UM/UIM coverage in place.

Understand UM/UIM coverage is not the PIP (personal injury protection coverage) that is automatically found on your car policy.  PIP only pays your doctors 80% of their bills up to $10,000.  It doesn’t pay for pain and suffering or lost wages and as you can see only pays a portion of your medical bills.

Obviously UM/UIM coverage is not free, but well worth it if you are injured in an accident.  Numbers don’t lie….in a lifetime you will be involved in 3-4 car accidents.  Each year there are 10 MILLION car accidents in US.  2.44 MILLION injured in 2015.  43% of car accidents involve an injury
